PROCESS

SLIP CASTING

To maintain uniformity in the pots, slip casting was chosen which makes use of a POP mould and a liquid mixture of terracotta, farm clay and fire clay.

SLAB CASTING

We also tried slab casting to have more control on the darkness of the red terracotta colour of the final pots as well glazing temperatures.

The Gumla was born out of curiosity about forms and shapes with the intention of challenging the standard cylindrical archetype of terracotta pots.

I learned a lot about the terracotta industry in India and how every potter has their own unique skill and take to bring this product to life whether it was via slip casting, slab casting, and even hand throwing the cylinders and then faceting it.

I find the porous nature of Terracotta very beautiful as it creates a layer of efflorescence (white patina) on the surface of the pot over time as the plant in it grows and is watered. Showing that the pot is aging as the plant grows and as the user grows older.
